RUGGED RANCH HAY FEEDER
THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF AN INEXPENSIVE HOME MADE HAY FEEDER USING A VINYL BLUE BARREL, A FEW SCRAP 2X4s, SOME SHEET ROCK SCREWS AND EIGHT 3-INCH CARRIAGE BOLTS.
THIS FEEDER WAS DESIGNED WITH THE
6-TO-9 MONTH OLD KIDS IN MIND WITH THE HEAD HOLES RUNNING ALL THE WAY ACROSS.
THE SINGLE HOLE FEEDERS WORK O.K. FOR THE YOUNGER KIDS AND FOR ADULTS, AS SEEN IN THE PICTURES ABOVE ON THIS PAGE, BUT FROM AGE 6 MONTHS TO ONE YEAR OF AGE, OFTEN TWO KIDS SQUEEZE INTO ONE HOLE AND THAT CAN QUICKLY LEAD TO DISASTER.
THIS DESIGN IS MORE WASTEFUL BUT MUCH SAFER FOR THIS AGE GROUP.
NOTE: THERE IS VIRTUALLY NOTHING FOR THE GOATS TO GET THEIR HEADS CAUGHT ON.
DRAIN HOLES IN THE BOTTOM
WE HAVE ALSO ADDED SOME HOLES TO THIS DESIGN TO LET THE RAIN WATER OUT. WE STILL HAVE TO CHANGE THE HAY BUT THESE HOLES HELP TO REDUCE THE SPOILED & ROTTEN HAY ON THE BOTTOM OF THE FEEDER AND IT IS MUCH EASIER TO HOSE OUT AFTER A RAIN.
WE MARK THE BARREL WITH A CHALK LINE AND SLICE OFF ABOUT 10% WITH OUR POWER SAW. THEN FASTEN TWO, 1-INCH BY 6-INCH BOARDS TO EACH END OF THE BARREL WITH SHEETROCK SCREWS TO HELP SUPPORT THE LEGS. THEN FASTEN EACH LEG TO THE BARREL WITH TWO, 1/4 INCH BY 3-INCH CARRIAGE BOLTS. THE FRAME AND BRACES ARE FASTENED WITH 3-INCH SHEETROCK SCREWS.
A CLOSE UP OF THE END CONSTRUCTION.
THE ENTIRE FEEDER IS INEXPENSIVE, TAKES ABOUT TWO HOURS TO BUILD AND IS LIGHT WEIGHT ENOUGH TO BE MOVED AROUND WITHOUT CREATING BACK PAIN.
On some of the older Billy Goat Gruff feeders (just above) I modified them with a tray made of 2x4s and plywood but that was never very successful because of weather.
RUGGED RANCH HAY FEEDER
This picure & the following 5 are of our new Rugged Ranch Hay Feeders. Light weight and easy to move. Smaller feeders work better for smaller pens. Somebody finally designed one with a tray to catch the alfalfa leaves. Just right for the weanlings - 11-10-2014
RUGGED RANCH HAY FEEDER
They are actually made in Vista, California. We bought them through Amazon dot com with shipping on UPS. They do not sell direct. Check www.RuggedRanch.net for a dealer near you. Waste-reducing hay feeders have always eluded me. There are several of this similar design & and size feeders on the market but I liked the waste reducing tray on this model to catch the leaves and extra stems.
RUGGED RANCH HAY FEEDER
These hay feeders are light weight for easy movement to clean under them. At my age I need lighter weight. But they are made of tough galvanized material. For once the seller was being truthful about the time required for "some assembly required." It is well designed & only took me a few minutes with sockets to put it together. Just 4 bolts, included.
We bought two of them, one for the weanling buck pen and one for the milkers. We needed a 4-foot space under the awning filled in for the added milkers and so far this has filled the bill.

======================
These hay feeders made with the feed box 12 inches deep so that the goat has to reach down to get hay and then raise up to pull their head out, minimizing hay loss. The upright dividers are 7 & 1/4 inches apart, further limiting hay loss as the goats will knock off that hay which hangs from either side of their mouth as they pull their head out of the feeder while chewing.
These feeders are kept... under an awning on the south side of our doe loafing barn out of the weather. As indicated by the white arrows, the hay feeders are mounted on 2x12 inch runners so that they can be moved out into the lot while we clean under the awning. Then the feeders are moved back under the awning. We clean the area about once a month.
These hay feeders are mounted on 2x12 inch runners so that they can be easily moved around with the tractor. About once a month we move these hay feeders out into the lot and clean the area with the tractor & loader and then drag them back under the awning so the does can eat in all weather conditions. The cleaning process also includes spreading fresh "man sand" under the awing after cleaning & before putting the feeders back in place.
