NEW DAIRY BARN  2008 - 2009

MVC-021S.jpgTHIS VIEW IS LOOKING WEST AND SHOWS THE NEWLY CONSTRUCTED COMBINATION DAIRY BARN AND CHEESE ROOM 36 FEET BY 24 FEET.   THIS VIEW ALSO SHOWS THE 12 FOOT BY 36 FOOT AWNING COVERING THE HOLDING AREA & PARLOR DOOR  WHERE THE GOATS WAIT TO BE MILKED.   THIS AREA IS COVERED WITH 6 INCHES OF MAN SAND.   THE 12 FOOT BY 14 FOOT AREA AROUND THE PARLOR DOOR HAS A HEAVY BLACK PERFORATED NYLON MAT COVERING THE MAN SAND TO ABSORB URINE AND PROVIDE A SANITARY BACTERIA BARRIER FOR MASTITIS CONTROL.
MVC-024S.jpg HERE IS A CLOSER VIEW OF THE NYLON MAT IN THE HOLDING AREA WHERE DOES TYPICALLY GO OUTSIDE AND LAY DOWN DIRECTLY AFTER BEING MILKED WAITING FOR THE HERD TO GO BACK TO THE LOAFING BARN AS A GROUP.   DURING THIS TIME THEY ARE VULNERABLE TO CONTAMINATION WHILE THEIR OPRIFICES ARE CLOSING UP DESPITE THE FACT THEY HAVE BEEN POST DIPPED.   PROVIDING A DRY CLEAN ENVIRONMENT DURING POST MILKING TIME IS CRUCIAL TO HERD HEALTH.MVC-025S.jpg - limestone path.jpg

ABOVE IS SHOWN A PATH FROM THE MILK PARLOR TO THE LOAFING BARN 6 FEET WIDE AND 6 INCHES DEEP WITH MAN SAND SO THE DOES'  FEET WILL BE DRY AND CLEANER WHEN THEY ENTER THE MILK ROOM.

THE TWO ABOVE PICTURES ARE OF THE SEPTIC SYSTEM AND THE LATERAL LINES, BOTH OF WHICH WERE HIGHLY SCRUTANIZED IN BOTH THE PLANNING AND CONSTRUCTION PHASES BY BOTH THE STATE DAIRY DIVISION AND THE DOUGLAS COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT.

THIS IS THE MILK PARLOR ENTRANCE LOOKING EAST.   THE FLOOR IS POURED CONCRETE THAT HAS BEEN DOUBLE SEALED WHICH MAKES IT EASY TO WASH DOWN WITH HOT WATER AND SANITIZER AFTER EACH MILKING.   THE INTERIOR IS SHEET ROCKED.  THE LOWER FOUR FEET OF THE WALLS ARE COVERED WITH A WATER PROOF MATERIAL CALLED MARLITE™  AND THE BOTTOM 5 INCHES ARE THEN COVERED WITH A WATERPROOF VINYL COVING AND CALKED.

THE TOTALLY CLIMATE CONTROLLED MILK PARLOR IS HEATED WITH A 10,000 BTU PROPANE WALL FURNACE.   WITH THE BUILDING HEAVILY INSULATED TO   R-30 THE ROOM STAYS VERY COMFORTABLE ON THE LOWEST SETTING.  THE ADJACENT CHEESE MAKING ROOM HAS A 20,000 BTU FURANCE WHICH ALSO HEATS THAT AREA QUITE WELL ON THE LOWEST SETTING.    ALL AREAS ARE AIR CONDITIONED IN THE SUMMER.

WHEN WE STARTED THIS PROJECT WE THOUGHT CONSTRUCTION WOULD BE COMPLETED WITHIN SIX WEEKS.   DUE TO RAIN AND CONTRACTOR SCHEDULING WE ONLY HAD THE CONCRETE FLOOR POURED IN 6 WEEKS.   THEN WINTER AND WET WEATHER SLOWED CONSTRUCTION.  OTHER THAN WEATHER, COORDINATION OF VARIOUS CONSTRUCTION AND INSTALLATION MODULES WENT SMOOTHLY AND WERE COMPLETED WITHIN BUDGET.

desktop 003.jpg NO OFF-THE-SHELF MILK STAND HAS EVER SUITED OUR NEEDS SO WE DESIGNED OUR OWN AND HAD THEM CUSTOM MADE.  THEY ARE 48 INCHES LONG AND 26 INCHES TALL SO WE DON'T HAVE TO BEND OVER  OR STOOP TO CONNECT THE MILKING MACHINE.   THE LEGS ARE ONE PIECE AND EXTEND FROM TOP TO BOTTOM AS PART OF THE HEAD STAND MAKING IT A LOT MORE STURDY.  THE CROSS BRACES UNDER THE EXTRUDED METAL FLOOR ARE ON EDGE AND ARE LESS THAN A QUARTER INCH WIDE SO THAT THEY PROVIDE MAXIMUM SUPPORT BUT DON'T COLLECT MANURE OR DEBRIS AND ARE EASY TO WASH DOWN.    THE FINISH IS CUSTOM GALVANIZED WITH A 100-YEAR WARANTY.   WE HAVE TWO OF THESE IN A 14 FOOT BY 18 FOOT MILK PARLOR.WE MILK ONE DOE WHILE PREPING THE OTHER ONE.   THERE IS AN 8-FOOT FLOOR DRAIN RUNNING NORTH TO SOUTH UNDER THE MILK STAND REQUIRED BY STATE DAIRY DIVISION REGULATIONS.   AS YOU LOOK THROUGH THESE PICTURES YOU MAY ALSO NOTICE THE  ELECTRICAL OUTLETS ARE ALL AT THE REQUIRED 4-FOOT LEVEL.
desktop 006.jpgTHE APPROACH RAMP IS ALSO 48 INCHES LONG AND HAS 7 CROSS PIECES WELDED TO THE EXTRUDED METAL TO GIVE THE DOE MORE TRACTION GOING UP AND DOWN.  THE CROSS BRACES ARE NARROW FOR EASIER WASH DOWN PURPOSES.   THE RAMP HAS A QUICK RELEASE SO IT CAN BE MOVED OR WASHED EASILY.  THE WHITE BUCKET AGAINST THE WALL IS FOR COLLECTING USED WASH CLOTHS AFTER PRE-WASH.   THEY ARE TAKEN TO THE HOUSE AND WASHED AND DRIED BEFORE BEING USED AGAIN.desktop 007.jpgTHE HEAD GATE HAS INFINITE SETTINGS TO FIT ANY SIZE GOAT NECK.   THE ROD IS COVERED WITH CLEAR VINYL TUBING AND FITS INTO A V-SHAPED CREVICE SO AFTER IT IS SUFFICIENTLY TIGHTENED JUST DROP THE LEVER DOWN SLIGHTLY AND THE GOAT IS SECURED.   SUE'S NEW DIGITAL T.V. IS ON THE WALL IN THE UPPER RIGHT CORNER.

desktop 008.jpgTHE FEED PAN  IS A 1-GALLON VINYL PAINT BUCKET FROM THE HARDWARE STORE AND SITS IN A STAINLESS STEEL RING BOLTED TO THE HEAD STAND CENTER HORIZONTAL BRACE.BELOW THE MILK STAND IS AN 8-FOOT FLOOR DRAIN.desktop 009.jpg ABOVE WE SEE THE STAINLESS STEEL MILK CANISTER WITH CLEAR VINYL LINES RUNNING FROM THE VACUUM SOURCE AND LINES RUNNING TO THE CLAW.  NOTICE THE HOOK ON THE SIDE OF THE MILK STAND SUPPORTNG THE MILK LINES TO THE CLAW.THIS HOOK TAKES SOME OF THE WEIGHT OFF OF THE GOAT'S UDDER AND IT KEEPS THE LINES OFF OF THE FLOOR.   THE MILK CANISTER IS ON A PLASTIC ROLLER DOLLY MAKING IT EASIER TO MOVE AROUND, PREVENTS DAMAGE TO THE BOTTOM, AND IS MORE SANITARY BECAUSE THE CANISTER NEVER TOUCHES THE FLOOR.   BARELY VISIBLE IN THE BASCKGROUND ALONG THE WEST WALL IS A STAINLESS STEEL WORK TABLE FOR MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS.desktop 011.jpgTHIS IS THE VACUUM EQUIPMENT PART OF THE NEW MILKING MACHINE AND INCLUDES THE ELCTRIC PULSATOR CONTROL, RELIEF VALVE, VACUUM GAGE, PULSATOR, VACUUM RESERVOIR, AND OFF - ON SWITCH

 THIS IS AN OFFICE & STORAGE AREA SEPARATED BY A SOLID INSULATED WALL FROM THE PARLOR WHERE THE 10-HORSE MOTOR AND VACUUM PUMP ARE LOCATED.HOUSED IN THIS AREA VERY LITTLE NOISE GETS TO THE PARLOR OR CHEESE ROOM.  THE MEDICINE CABINET, MICROSCOPE AND SEMEN TANKS, ETC., ARE KEPT IN THIS ROOM.
